Bending the Arc Toward Justice on MLK Day & Beyond

When I was 10, I saw a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that featured his powerful “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. It was the kind of speech that sticks with you. Hearing Dr. King talk about perseverance and purpose made me want to test my own limits. That spark led me to challenges I never imagined. However, as much as I value those personal accomplishments, the work I’ve done to help open doors for underprivileged communities means the most to me.

MLK Day reminds us of what’s possible when we don’t back down from challenges—no matter how intimidating they might seem. Dr. King’s vision of diversity and equality continues to inspire me and countless others. It’s a call to action to keep pushing for progress, not just for ourselves but for everyone.

At Clayco, we believe in making that vision a reality. Our team is committed to creating opportunities for people from all walks of life. Take the Construction Career Development Initiative (CCDI), for example. In St. Louis alone, CCDI has assisted175 people with full-time employment in the trades, awarded 74 Build Our Future Scholarships totaling over $650,000,  placed 73 students into paid high school and college internships, and assisted 5 Build Our Future Scholarship college graduates with full-time career placement.

Right now, we’re in a moment in history where we can all make a difference. Conversations about inequality and systemic racism can lead to real solutions. It’s not easy work, but it’s necessary. That’s why we’re committed to doing our part—not just within Clayco’s walls but also in the communities we serve. We know that diversity and inclusion aren’t just ideals; they’re essential to creating a better, stronger future.

Whether we’re reflecting on Dr. King’s dream or navigating moments of leadership and change, one thing is clear: we have to stand together. Unity is our superpower. When we support one another, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.

As Dr. King reminded us, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” It’s up to each of us to make sure it bends a little faster. By using our voices, taking meaningful actions, and refusing to stay silent, we honor his legacy and move closer to the dream he envisioned.

Let’s keep pushing forward together!
