Turning creative energy into leadership is how we build innovative spaces where people and ideas can grow. That’s exactly what Ja’Mel McCaine does as the Creative Lab Manager at the Clark Family Branch. His path has been shaped by hard work and a deep commitment to helping others. Ja’Mel leads with kindness and creates a space where people from all walks of life can explore, learn, and build something new. I’m proud to shine a light on someone who truly lives out the mission behind The Art & Science of Building by making room for others and inspiring communities through creativity!
A Story of Creativity & Resilience
Born and raised in St. Louis, Ja’Mel has been creating since childhood—drawing, painting, and designing. However, his passion didn’t come from textbooks or formal mentors early on. It came from within and from the influence of his grandmother, who encouraged his talents and imagination. After high school, Ja’Mel joined the U.S. Navy, serving as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex. There, he developed the grit, work ethic, and leadership that now anchor his professional life. Using the GI Bill, he went on to earn a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) in 2005, transforming raw talent into a lifelong career in the arts, education, and digital media.
Leading A Space for Creation
My vision for the Clark Family Branch has always been to develop a space that truly serves the community for generations to come, and seeing it thrive under the leadership of passionate individuals like Ja’Mel is more than I could have hoped for. Ja’Mel does an excellent job running the creative lab, which is packed with tools that help students, residents, and entrepreneurs of all ages bring ideas to life. With 3D printers, a soundproof studio with individual recording rooms, a Cricut, Apple Macs, musical instruments, and various other tools, the lab offers incredible resources and stepping stones to careers, businesses, and self-expression.
Ja’Mel makes sure that, regardless of skill level or experience, no one walks in feeling intimidated or left out. Whether someone is interested in making music, designing a product, or recording a podcast, he teaches them the skills to take control of their own creative process. Ja’Mel doesn’t just do the work for people but empowers them to learn, experiment, and evolve. That approach is what makes this lab so special.
Art, Advocacy, & Forging Forward
Ja’Mel’s career path has never been about staying in one lane. He’s been a high school teacher, a graphic designer, a marketer, and more. During the pandemic, he found himself laid off—but instead of backing down, he leaned into learning. He taught himself new tools, gained experience at the St. Louis Public Library, and ultimately landed where he is now and has been building up others the same way he built himself. Ja’Mel’s work goes far beyond the library. He is also behind public art projects like the mural “Save Our Sons,” which is on display at Delmar DivINe, where it stands as an impactful symbol of the continued need for social justice.
This mural, created with spray paint, is both deeply personal to Ja’Mel and also widely relatable. The three figures represent his past, present, and future selves: a younger version in military fatigues, the present self holding the American flag with hope, and a future version, dressed in yellow, that is more aware and connected to the world’s challenges. Art like this matters because it goes beyond words. It gives form to emotion, experience, and identity. It reflects our humanity and invites connection, often saying what can’t be spoken and helping us see ourselves and each other more clearly. Ja’Mel’s story shows how creativity, when combined with community commitment, becomes a force for healing and empowerment.
The Next Generation of Creators
Looking ahead, Ja’Mel is preparing for the launch of a hands-on youth summer camp program that introduces young people to the tools and ideas shaping the future. It’s a fun chance for kids and teens to explore the Clark Family Branch, try out business ideas, and get creative with art and music. Although it’s not always easy work, especially when it comes to encouraging consistent participation among teens, Ja’Mel creates a space that’s inclusive, exciting, and welcoming, which keeps them coming back. He understands that success isn’t just about access to tools—it’s about feeling seen, heard, and supported. I have always respected and recognized the importance of mentorship, and Ja’Mel is undoubtedly one of the best in the business.
Going Above & Beyond
The Clark Family Branch will continue to be a place where innovation meets belonging, thanks to people like Ja’Mel, who have taken that mission and made it real. He reminds us that great buildings need even greater people to come alive, and he shows what’s possible when we design spaces that reflect the diverse, creative, and determined spirit of St. Louis. Ja’Mel, thank you for what you’re building. Thank you for your service, your vision, and your heart. You’re not just managing a space. You’re lighting the path for others to follow.
