The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt's New World

Dive into the world of Alexander von Humboldt, a courageous explorer and the most influential scientist of his time. Andrea Wulf’s book, “The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt's New World,” is an incredible story of insatiable curiosity. It is not just a biography – it's a tribute to the spirit of adventure and the tireless pursuit of knowledge.

As an explorer myself, I appreciated Wulf’s depiction of Humboldt’s extensive travels across Europe, Latin America, and Russia. It highlights his extraordinary ability to observe, evaluate, and immerse himself in the environment, geography, and cultures he encountered. Humboldt’s revolutionary view of nature as an interconnected web of life laid the groundwork for modern environmentalism and ecology.

Wulf paints a vivid picture of Humboldt's bold life and his groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of the natural world. I can identify with his restlessness and drive to discover new and exciting parts of our world, whether reaching the summit of the highest peaks or trekking into wild environments. I don’t think Humboldt knew the word “boring”!

Another important topic is Humboldt’s prediction of human-induced climate change, something that proves to be very relevant and critical today. Wulf also examines Humboldt’s relationships with iconic figures like Simón Bolívar and Thomas Jefferson and how his writings inspired other naturalists and poets such as Darwin, Wordsworth, and Goethe.

Alexander von Humboldt's legacy is characterized by his profound contributions to science, his pioneering spirit of exploration, and his enduring influence on our understanding of our natural environment. His name still graces four counties, thirteen towns, a river, parks, bays, lakes, and mountains in North America, a great tribute to his fascination with nature.

I strongly recommend this thoroughly researched and compellingly written book for those looking to gain a better understanding of our planet and the history of science.
