Rebuilding Hope: A Journey in Morocco

My wife and I are helping build hope in Morocco!

On September 8th, 2023, a rare 6.8-magnitude earthquake and 4.9-magnitude aftershock devastated the region near the town of Oukaïmedene in the Atlas Mountains, a rural area about 50 miles southwest of Marrakech. The Moroccan government reported that the disaster killed nearly 3,000 people and injured more than 5,600.

Last week, Jane and I visited the earthquake-torn villages of southwest Morocco that we have been helping rebuild since the devastating event that took place. We are very grateful for the opportunity to restore some community spaces and schools for the beautiful children. Being on the ground there and connecting with the people firsthand has been such an emotional experience, and witnessing their resilience was inspiring.

I would like to thank my friend Ghita Antra, PhD, whom we previously met at Expo 2020 Dubai when she was the Pavilion Director for Morocco’s award-winning facility and program. As an amazing international expert in Human Rights, Gender, Inclusion, and Social Justice, Ghita facilitates impactful work and projects worldwide.

Lending a helping hand to communities is crucial to promoting equality and fostering solidarity across borders. When we have the means to assist, it is our responsibility to do so in whatever way we can. I am both proud and humbled to be part of such a vital effort to restore the lives and livelihoods of those in need.

Let’s create a world that is better than how we found it – one act of kindness at a time!
