Earth Day serves as an annual reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our planet for future generations – but I didn’t always feel that way. Decades ago, when my son Shawn came home with a shirt that said, “Save the Trees! Earth Day,” I scolded him about the fact that we don't care about Earth Day because we are who they're saving the trees from. I told him at that time that from now on, every Earth Day, he and I were going to go ride a bulldozer and knock down as many trees as possible. 

Luckily, my perspective has changed incredibly since then, and I have been educated on the vital importance of eco-friendly initiatives, especially within the construction industry, which contributes 33% of greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of global energy consumption from the usage of the equipment, transportation, and building materials. 

This Earth Day, Clayco is planting 1000 trees in Berkeley, where the new STL office is located. To combat climate change and these staggering statistics, our Clayco team is also dedicated to fulfilling the requirements of our employees, clients, and future generations in a way that upholds environmental responsibility. We view it as our obligation to safeguard and conserve the natural and cultural assets of the communities we engage with.

Earth Day motivates us to prioritize renewable energy sources, reduce carbon emissions, and minimize waste in our construction projects. Embracing Earth Day not only aligns with our moral responsibility to preserve the planet but also fosters long-term viability and resilience in our industry. Implementing sustainable construction practices creates a built environment that blends with nature, mitigates environmental degradation, and ensures a more vibrant future for all.

Construction leaders must prioritize and explore alternatives to the high levels of embodied carbon found in steel, cement, and other energy-intensive manufactured products utilized in the industry. Every day offers an opportunity for us to contribute positively to our communities and the world. Let's commit to understanding more, improving our actions, and collectively striving for a brighter future.
