Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The time is always right to do what is right,” – and Clayco has a rich history of doing the right thing. We have continuously operated with our people, places, and clients in mind to build “Beyond These Walls.” This mantra emulates that what happens inside the buildings we construct is more important than the bricks and mortar.
Today, Clayco released our initial Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report. The report highlights how our construction functions significantly address the climate crisis, our goals for improvement, and the steps we are taking to ensure we are responsible for our actions.
When I founded Clayco in 1984, the construction industry was far from safe and severely lacking diversity. People were getting hurt on construction jobs every day, and the collective thought was, “That is just the way it is.“ Our Clayco team focused on radically transforming the status quo to lead the way in safety and diversity.
We became the first to implement inclusive procurement practices on each project. As a top ten builder in North America, 79% of all our projects completed in 2022 achieved zero recordable injuries when including Clayco employees and our trade partners and demonstrated an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.52. EMR is a tool used by insurance companies to calculate workplace risk, with 1.0 as the industry average.
Our Clayco team has been strengthened tremendously by having people of color and from various cultures, backgrounds, and expertise, adding new perspectives and insights to our mission and neighborhoods. To build the future we hope for, we must address the planet’s overarching and societal threats, from climate change to DEI and beyond.
Although the industry still has a long way to go to evolve into the inclusive space we need it to be, we are making great strides to propel this movement forward. Our ESG initiatives reflect how everything we do operates The Clayco Way – honoring diversity and innovation with every step.
