This project is breaking ground in more ways than one!
The world’s leading Japanese battery technology company, Envision AESC, is building a 1.5 million square foot state-of-the-art battery cell gigafactory in Florence County, South Carolina, and celebrated its groundbreaking yesterday.
Lamar Johnson Collaborative is the architect for the facility and will aid Envision AESC in fulfilling its mission to solve complex modern challenges for a sustainable future. With construction of the plant underway, commercial operations are expected to commence in 2026.
To meet its global commitment to sustainability goal, the new 30GWh manufacturing plant will be powered by 100% net zero carbon energy. This partnership is vital to powering the next generation of electric vehicles in the United States.
I attended the groundbreaking ceremony and had the opportunity to meet some of the people this transformative project will impact firsthand. This investment will create 1,170 new jobs while helping lead the decarbonization revolution with innovative solutions. As pro-business South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster (who I had the pleasure of meeting) said:
“South Carolina has been an automotive manufacturing powerhouse for over 30 years, and Envision AESC’s decision to establish operations in Florence County and to create jobs for thousands of South Carolinians shows that we will continue to be one for years to come.”
I also saw my good friend Mike Mullis at the groundbreaking. He completed the project’s site selection and is a gigantic advocate for the Clayco brand family and the impactful work we do. We are grateful for his continued support!
We will continue to invest in and build developments like these to take critical steps forward for local communities and the U.S. economy.
