Kiku Obata: A Visionary in Creative Thinking

Kiku Obata is a name synonymous with innovation, creativity, and thoughtful design. As the founder and principal of Kiku Obata & Company, a St. Louis-based design firm with a global reputation, Kiku has spent decades shaping the way people interact with spaces, brands, and communities. Design and creativity run deep in Kiku’s family. She is the granddaughter of renowned artist Chiura Obata and the daughter of Gyo Obata, the imaginative architect and co-founder of one of the world’s leading architecture firms, HOK. However, Kiku has forged her own path, building an incredible legacy in design, creative thinking, and economic development.

Born in Chicago and educated at Stanford, Kiku’s international background is reflected in her diverse portfolio of projects. From developing branding to designing public spaces, her approach consistently emphasizes the human experience. Kiku believes design is more than aesthetics—it’s about making places engaging and dynamic.  She’s one of the most creative people I’ve worked with, continually pushing boundaries and delivering work of immense impact. Currently, Kiku is leading the design of the graphics package, art placement, and selection of terrific artwork for the new Russell Burns building in St. Louis (our new STL headquarters). Her work blends a deep understanding of design, strategy, and storytelling to create experiences that are unique and meaningful.

Over the years, Kiku Obata & Company has worked across industries, creating identity systems for prominent institutions like the Saint Louis Art Museum and reimagining transit experiences for Metrolink. Kiku’s designs blend form and function while remaining authentic to the communities they serve. One of Kiku’s defining traits is her ability to see the big picture while also tending to the smallest details. Her passion for creating spaces that connect people and ideas has earned her widespread respect, and she is celebrated not only for elevating the profile of organizations but also for creating experiences that make everyday interactions more inspiring.

Kiku’s legacy is one of purpose and impact. Her work continues to influence how we experience and enjoy spaces and reminds us that thoughtful design has the power to bring people together and shape communities for the better. Kiku is a true visionary who continues to create incredibly important work in design, creative thinking, and economic development.
