Exciting news for Chicagoans and everyone who travels from, to, or through our amazing city—we finally can take a peek at renderings for the first new concourse at O’Hare International Airport!
Mayor Brandon Johnson unveiled the design for Satellite Concourse 1, which marks a significant step in the visionary O’Hare 21 Terminal Area Plan and is a proud moment for our AECOM Hunt Clayco Bowa JV, who was selected as the building team. This is the first new concourse at O’Hare since Terminal 5 was built over 30 YEARS ago! The images show a three-story building featuring plenty of space to welcome and accommodate international and domestic visitors—and I personally can’t wait to see the real thing come to life.
The curb-to-gate project is just one piece of a $6.1 billion endeavor to upgrade the passenger facilities at O’Hare to revolutionize travel in one of America’s busiest hubs. It aims to modernize the airport and deliver a seamless and efficient travel experience with 19 new gates and state-of-the-art facilities. Our team is excited to be involved in various aspects of the expansion, including the Terminal 5 Landside & Parking Improvements, the Elevated Parking Structure Rehabilitation, the Runway 4R-22L Rehabilitation, the Lower Level Utility & Pavement Reconstruction, and the Airfield Basin’s Modifications.
Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects, and Arup are designing Satellite Concourse 1. The structure is located off of Terminal 1 and aims to foster the best in aviation experience. It’s also a great investment in our local economy and community, as construction is expected to generate more than 3,800 jobs, making O’Hare and the Chicagoland area EXTRAORDINARY for generations to come.
The gate lounges are an excellent example of what it means to build with people in mind, as they blend incredible architecture with human instinct. They will feature column-free expanses for easy wayfinding, high ceilings to optimize views, and a daylighting strategy to help align the body's natural rhythms.
I’m thrilled about all the innovation coming to Chicago and to have the opportunity to work on aspects of this transformative project. Our work is all about connecting people and making the city an even better place to visit and live.
Let’s keep rising to new altitudes!
