It’s with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our dear friend and favorite cowboy, Jeff Groom. A fifth-generation native of the Roaring Fork Valley, Jeff was more than a cowboy—he was a living bridge between the Valley’s storied past and its vibrant present.
Jeff had an innate connection to the land. He knew every inch of the Valley, and his life was deeply rooted in the values of the West: hard work, honesty, humility, and grit. You could always count on seeing Jeff’s truck and trailer making the rounds, delivering livestock and bringing his quiet, steady energy wherever it was needed.
Through Snowmass Creek Outfitters, Jeff shared his gift with the community and beyond. Those who rode with him, even just once, know that the horses didn’t simply come from anywhere. Jeff had a way of choosing them, training them, and understanding them that made you believe maybe they chose him, too.
Jeff’s story wouldn’t be complete without Amy, his partner in life and love. Nearly two decades ago, in a fateful moment in Downtown Basalt, Amy took a chance on the cowboy in the corner and never looked back. Together, they built a life filled with horses, laughter, rodeo nights, and a family bound by love and adventure.
Their sons, Dylan and Bowen, carry that legacy forward. Whether it’s roping practice in the yard, helping saddle up for rodeo night, or taking their tenacity to the rink or the field, the boys reflect the strength and spirit that Jeff lived every day.
Jeff had a great impact on this Valley and all of us lucky enough to know him. We’ll miss you, Jeff.
Ride on, cowboy. We’ll keep showing up.
